Observations of the Contemporary Use of Technology

Mediate/Meditate

The Mediate/Meditate project (2007 to 2012) consists of a suite of medium and larger oil on canvas works, watercolors plus a suite of related collages. The Mediate/Meditate project documents the use of devices such as IPhones, IPods, Gameboys and PDAs in contemporary society. Drawing upon my studies in Popular Culture I have been struck by the inherent contradiction of how electronic media both enable communication yet isolate the users from their surrounding environment. The images therefore are iconic in nature as the figures float isolated on fields of color.

The sources for the imagery range from studies from life to images from mass media. The paintings and collages employ the high key colors and a drawing style inspired by vector drawing programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Flash used by modern graphic designers for print, web, animation and game design; while also making reference to East Asian miniatures, 1950s illustration and the work of Matisse.
